French Canadian vocalist Lynn Veronneau has a warm, compelling voice, love of powerful melodies, sophisticated phrasing and heartfelt focus on the story. Her quartet has a sparkling jazz-pop sound with elements of bossa nova, samba, swing and gypsy jazz. For this Byrd Series program, they will perform a concert set and show the film “Bossa Nova: The Music That Charmed the World.” In 2012, Veronneau released the recording, “The Jazz Samba Project” a 50th anniversary tribute to “Jazz Samba,” the Charlie Byrd-Stan Getz recording which brought Brazilian bossa nova and its legendary composers Tom Jobim and Joao Gilberto to world-wide attention in 1962. In preparation for the recording, the band did a lot of research about the history and impact of “Jazz Samba,” talking with some of the original musicians and preparing the CD - with its extensive liner notes featuring archival photos and information. When the recording was released, Veronneau band-member Ken Avis decided that the background material they unearthed working on the recording, including an interview with the late Joe Byrd, was too valuable to sit on a shelf. He teamed with writer and filmmaker Bret Primack to produce a documentary, “Bossa Nova: The Music That Charmed the World,” that had its world premiere last year at Strathmore music center in North Bethesda.
