Vocal fireworks to kick off the July Fourth holiday week. Giacomo Gates is a jazz singer with the poise of a showman, the zeal of an aficionado and to quote the New York Times, a “ deep, cognac baritone.” with a “vintage-hipster lexicon.” With his phrasing, his bearing and a deceptively easy nonchalance, he has made a specialty out of vocalese, the jazz practice of setting original lyrics to melodies that were originally part of an all-instrumental composition or a musician’s improvisation. It is probably no accident that his vocal timbre can evoke Eddie Jefferson, a pioneer in the style, but his considerable chops are always at the service of the song and in concert, the vocalese is applied judiciously brightening an already stylish selection of swing and be-bop. Jazz reviewer Christopher Louden called him a contender for the mantle of "coolest, sharpest, male vocalist around." Gates plays clubs in the US, tours internationally and has seven acclaimed CDs, his most recent, "What Time Is It?" was released in April. His previous release, "The Revolution Will Be Jazz-The Songs of Gil Scott-Heron" reached #1 for six weeks on the National Jazz Playlist, and "MilesTones" was #1 for four weeks. Giacomo Gates will perform at The Mainstay with Fred Hughes on piano, John Pineda on bass and Frank Russo on drums.
